This Masakage “Kumo” petty is a masterpiece crafted by Takumi Ikeda from Anryu Hamono, utilizing VG10 stainless steel, and skillfully sharpened by Takayuki Shibata. The blade’s mesmerizing Kurosome Damascus finish is achieved through meticulous folding of the steel into dozens of layers. The result is not only visually stunning but also ensures a smooth cutting performance, thanks to the beautiful edge geometry and distal tapering.
The blade is paired with an octagonal wa-handle made of Rosewood, with a pakkawood Ferrule, adding to the knife’s overall aesthetic and functionality. The knife’s origin lies in Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, under the renowned brand Masakage, founded in 2007 by Takayuki Shibata, one of Japan’s top knife sharpeners.
Crafted at Anryu Hamono, a distinguished knife-making workshop with a rich history dating back to 1873, Katsushige Anryu, the 4th generation knife artisan, played a pivotal role. His expertise in traditional knife forging and the passing down of skills to his successor, Takumi Ikeda, ensures the continuation of Anryu Hamono’s legacy.
Masakage Kumo, aptly named “cloud,” presents dreamy blades hand-forged with VG-10 stainless steel, wrapped in alternating damascus layers of stainless steel and nickel. The knife embodies a perfect blend of craftsmanship and artistry, providing not only a heavenly aesthetic but also a light feel and forward balance for an exceptional culinary experience.
