Historical Significance:
Founded in Sakai City by samurai Torakichi Mizuno in 1872, Mizuno Tanrenjo has spanned four generations, earning acclaim for its expertise in crafting traditional Japanese-style chef’s knives, famously known as “Sakai Uchi.”
Master Artisan:
Masanori Mizuno, the second-generation craftsman, was honored with the task of forging “Mayokegama,” a sickle used to ward off evil spirits. These sickles adorned the roof of the Hōryū-ji temple in Nara, the oldest five-story wooden building in Japan, designated as a National Treasure and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Royal Recognition:
In 1952 and 1980, members of the Imperial family visited Mizuno Tanrenjo’s workshop, expressing admiration for their traditional forging techniques and craftsmanship. To preserve this honor for future generations, Mizuno initiated the engraving of the “賜台覧” (Royal Visit) logo on their blades.
